Horses and ponies grazing on sparse vegetation or receiving hay or feed spread on sandy or very dry and dusty soils may ingest varying amounts of sand. This sand can accumulate in the intestine and cause digestive disorders, adversely affecting normal intestinal function. It is believed that this gelatinous psyllium helps to stimulate the muscle waves or peristalsis that push the contents of the intestine along its length, helping to expel excess sand that may have accumulated in the intestine. Due to the abrasive nature of sand as it moves through the digestive system, the intestinal lining can be affected, disrupting the balance of the vital microbiome ("gut bugs") that normally adhere to the intestinal lining. Therefore, Sandout Pellets also contains a probiotic to help restore a healthy microbiome. Sandout Pellets should be fed for 7 consecutive days each month to prevent the gut and microbiome from becoming accustomed to psyllium and using it as a source of soluble fiber rather than an aid in expelling sand. Feeding for more than 7 days should be discussed with your veterinarian.
