It's important to adjust the curb chain without tightening it too much:

You should be able to pass 2 fingers between the curb chain and the chin.

With your hand, you should be able to make a 45° angle between the axis of the horse's mouth and the bit's shanks.

The tighter the curb chain, the stronger the action of the bit.
