Soft iron rusts on contact with moisture (from the air). The surface rust has a sweet taste and naturally stimulates saliva production. This encourages the horse to salivate more, which in turn encourages him to make more contact. The rusting process (oxidation) transforms the blue color of the Trust bit into gray-brown. A soft iron bit develops a layer of orange-brown rust on the mouthpiece if not used temporarily. This is easily removed with a damp cloth.
